Hand cut lettering is an art in itself, from the Romans to Eric Gill, and is not to be confused with laser or machine cut. From the design and layout to the cutting by hand with razor sharp carving tools, the aim is to achieve a memorial or plaque that catches the light and shines in its crispness, that a machine made sign can never do.
We have carved many memorials and signs, commercial, as the Pret a Manger sign in Oak below for their Cornmarket Oxford branch. Memorial benches for many parks and gardens inlcuding Her Majesty the Queens private garden at Sandringham, and private memorials for woodland burials.
This Oak carving was commissioned by Our Lady and St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Church in Wymondham Norfolk. And depicts St Thomas traditionally carrying the church, in this case a depiction of Wymondham church with its new extension.
The church is affiliated with FEPOW (Far Eastern Prisoners of War) and it was requested to incorporate barbed wire and bamboo into the design.
The carving is three feet by two and is made from 4inch English quarter sawn Oak.
